Ms. Maki is a partner at CARREL+Partners LLP, who practices primarily in the areas of real estate, estate planning (wills, powers of attorney), estate administration, and commercial matters.  Her practice largely involves navigating complex legal matters to achieve an efficient and effective result for her clients.

In commercial matters, Ms. Maki assists business clients with a wide variety of contracts and business development matters, such as incorporations, business structures, limited partnerships, shareholder agreements, sales/purchases of businesses, and commercial financing.

Ms. Maki works with clients in all aspects of real estate, such as: residential and commercial sales, purchases, and financing; commercial leasing; condominium development and administration; land and commercial development; rectification of complex title issues; and non-resident sales and purchases. She represents institutions, municipalities, religious organizations, major lenders, property developers, and individuals, with clients in various parts of Ontario, other provinces, and other countries.

In the area of estate planning, Ms. Maki has significant experience providing estate planning advice to people with a wide variety of needs, including the elderly and those with capacity issues. She develops estate plans for simple and complex estates which address client concerns regarding income taxes, probate taxes, disabled beneficiaries, trusts and asset protection. Ms. Maki has advised attorneys for property and personal care regarding their obligations, and has acted for clients seeking relief against attorneys who have acted improperly. She has also acted as power of attorney for property, and estate trustee, for several clients. She advises executors regarding administration of estates, and assists beneficiaries and other claimants who have concerns about the handling of an estate.  In particular, Ms. Maki focuses on estates with complex administrative issues.

  • Ontario counsel to developer of two condominiums and a hotel at the Thunder Bay Waterfront
  • Acted for developer of a phased condominium project
  • Acted for a condominium corporation to amend its declaration and description to create a new unit in the corporation; this was the first such amendment in the District of Thunder Bay
  • Acted for a Condominium Corporation to terminate the condominium
  • Acted for developer in creation of several stages of subdivision development and subsequent lot sales
  • Acted for religious organizations in sale of lands
  • Represented a municipality to obtain vesting order to correct title to lands to be acquired from a religious organization
  • Represented estate trustee on a sizeable estate with assets in six countries and multiple charitable beneficiaries
  • Prepared extensive estate planning documents that included over five testamentary trusts of four different kinds
  • Represented a client to successfully obtain a court declaration that client was a same-sex common law spouse in an estate matter
  • Represented non-residents with estate planning property transfers of cottage property
  • Represented new estate trustee in complicated estate with deceased executor and incapable beneficiaries
  • Represented estate trustees cleaning up estates of multiple deceased family members
